I went on a walk next to the lake earlier and saw a ~85 year old man using an iPhone. In the past, I read that 50% of serial murderers arrested in the last 10 years were iPhone users and frequently used their iPhones in their crimes. For instance, to get to know their victims and convince them to meet up in private, so they could kill them. Knowing this and wanting to protect others, I ran at the old man. He moved faster than I expected, but was still way too slow (I am 23 and 220lbs). He began to tire and I lined him up, then overhand-righted him on the temple. He dropped almost instantly, smashing his head on the concrete road. The iPhone fell down to his side, screen cracking. I stamped on it some more. Then I threw it as far as I could into the middle of the lake, and watched as it sunk down. I looked back, and the old man was unmoving. His head was bleeding heavily. I am a person who has a lot of empathy for suffering in the world, but I definitely have none here. Use the tools of serial killers and I will treat you the same way. He got whatever was coming to him, it just so happens that today it was me. I walked home and made spaghetti bolognese. It was delicious. There is something about knowing you stood up against the malice in the world in a small way that brings a deep sense of contentment. Even food tastes better. I donβt go looking for opportunities to be a hero, and I scarcely talk about it. But whenever I see something dubious, I try to act. If that is my only contribution to the world, then so be it, at least I made a small positive difference
