Photogenic, creepy, beautiful, misshapen, dorky, elegant, comedic, ancient... There are endless words used to describe these wonderful creatures.
For me, they absolutely lend themselves to the sharp shades of black and white photography. And I was lucky enough to catch exactly the shot I had been waiting for.
The Brown Pelican, Pelicanus occidentalis. One of nature's creations at the stranger end of the scale, these ungainly birds swarm around the island of Caye Caulker in the warm Caribbean waters of the Belizean coast. Found as far north in the Americas as British Columbia, they spend the majority of their time in the warmth of central, and the tip of South America where they choose to breed.
For birds, they come close to being of the strangest design, their giant bill used to catch fish, amphibians, small mammals and even the eggs and chicks of other bird species.
With their weighty flight, soaring like a pterodactyl under a setting sun, they are truly a relic of a dinosaur age; Remaining relatively unchanged through the fossil record for the last 36 million years!
